The age of "Self-Driving Car" is Approaching

The hottest issue in automobile industry is 'self-driving car'

The imagination of letting cars to drive by itself is becoming a reality. Just like telephone, which was first invented in 19th century, was evolved from a simple communication device into a smartphone with portability and utilities such as schedule management, photo shooting, and even payment method, the age of smart car is approaching.

In near future, we will be seeing self-driving cars that require drivers to only enter address of destination instead of actually driving the car and they will drive by itself to the destination.

Cars, the irreplaceable objects in modern people's lives, have been and are being continuously developed for better 'safety' and 'convenience' of people. Rather than hardware elements, the importance of software development such as AI (Artificial Intelligence), big data, and infotainment is being emphasized.

The global ICT company Google, which has been researching for smart car development since long before, recently separated self-driving car development department from Google. Google loaded an outstanding AI system which can detect surrounding objects and has highly advanced decision making capacity for unexpected incidents for test driving and it is leading the self-driving car industry.

Other leading ICT companies such as Apple, Samsung, and Baidu also have highly advanced related technologies and other car manufacturers announced to join self-driving car industry and began research and development. Korean car manufacturers Hyundai and Kia, and other related parts manufacturers currently have level 2 self-driving car technology. Recently launched Genesis EQ900 has 'Highway Driving Assistance' (HDA) system which allows the car to control the distance between other cars and drive within the lanes by itself.

In 2020, the self-driving cars are going to protect the lives of people.

The self-driving car industry and many experts are expecting that by 2020, the smart cars with 'full self-driving phase' (cars drive by itself from departure to parking at the destination without requiring any operation of drivers) will be mass produced and driving on the roads. The full self-driving cars, so-called 'driving AlphaGo', are expected to make positive influence on traffics. Based on the announcement from the World Health Organization (WHO), every year 1.25 million people worldwide are losing their lives in car accidents and 89% of them were cause by driver's mistakes.

The full self-driving cars drive base on accurate computer system and sensors thus they are expected to provide highly improved safety. And also, in traffic system management perspective it will be possible to find traffic status through communication network system. Accidents caused by human errors or aggressive driving behaviors can be prevented by self-driving system thus it is expected to reduce the number of accidents by over 90%.

On last April, the match result between AlphaGo and Lee Se-dol shocked mankind that the age of AI taking over our jobs and threatening our lives is near. People’s anxiety and negative standpoints on AlphaGo broke out widely. However, as all modern technologies were invented and developed to improve the lives of people, the development of self-driving car was also first started with a philosophy of preventing human errors of drivers for human safety. We need to remember that we have been keep developing new technologies and such technologies allowed us to advance to the future we imagined.
